  1. Try these five scenarios to get the feel of how Scan/US works:

  3. The first scenario: View Variables and look at the data.
  4. 1. Choose View Variables from the Scan/US Views Menu.
  5. 2. Select any of the variables from the variable drop-down for States.
  6. 3. Press the OK button.
  7. You have created your first thematic map with Scan/US.

  10. The second scenario: seeing data from different sources
  11. 1. Activate Select Mode by clicking on the pointing tool on the ToolPad to 
  12. the left.
  13. 2. Start up QuickLook by double-clicking on any state.
  14. 3. Click on any state to see the values for that state.
  15. 4. Select other databases from the bottom of the data menu to see data from 
  16. different sources.
  17. The variables and their values will change to show data from the new 
  18. database.

  20. The third scenario: Map Creation.  
  21. 1. Click on an object in the US map, for example, Pennsylvania
  22. 2. Choose New Study Area from the Scan/US Map menu.
  23. 3. Press the OK button.
  24. 4. Watch how new features -- in this case, Counties -- load into the new map.
  25. The Scan/US system creates maps easily and automatically; it takes care of 
  26. the details of boundary file storage and retrieval for you.

  29. The fourth scenario: creating territories and aggregate data.
  30. 1. Activate grouping mode by pressing the third-from-the-top ToolPad button 
  31. on the left of your Scan/US screen.
  32. 2. Press the radius subtool in the middle of the bottom group of three 
  33. ToolPad buttons.
  34. 3. Draw a radius out from any point on the map: for example Memphis.
  35. 4. Accept the default grouping and group names and colors by Clicking on 
  36. OK, then OK again.
  37. 5. The states within the radius you have selected will be grouped together -- 
  38. colored red.
  39. 6. Choose Quicklook from the bottom of the Views Menu to see the totals 
  40. for the group.
  41. Other grouping submode buttons let you add objects one by one to your 
  42. group, or create a group by drawing around an irregularly shaped area.

  46. The fifth scenario: View Variables with and look at multiple variables.
  47. 1. Choose View Variables from the Scan/US Views Menu.
  48. 2. Select more than one variable from the variable drop-down for States.  A 
  49. good choice for this example would be the three age-range variables: 
  50. popu18, pop18_64, and pop65pl.
  51. 3. Press the Scan/US Gallery button located just to the right of the variable 
  52. selector drop-down.  Using the scroll bar, scroll across to the Pie Chart 
  53. and select it by clicking on the picture of the pie.
  54. 4. Press the OK button in the Gallery dialog.
  55. 5. Press the OK button in the View Variables dialog.
  56. You have created a multi-variable thematic map with Scan/US.

  61. Note: In select mode, when you want to select an object on another layer, 
  62. press the shift key and click the right mouse button.  In this manner, you can 
  63. select an object which is "underneath" another object.

  65. Note number 2: The state and county boundary set included with the full 
  66. Scan/US version are more detailed.  In order to fit the working model onto 
  67. just one floppy diskette, the higher-resolution boundaries were omitted.

  69. Note number 3: If for some reason you need to reinstall this Scan/US working
  70. model, you must first DELETE the file named SCANUS.INI located in your
  71. \WINDOWS directory.  The setup program will not reinstall the working 
  72. model
  73. if it finds SCANUS.INI in your \WINDOWS directory.  Have fun!

  76. Lastly, UNINSTALL INSTRUCTIONS:  
  77. 1. delete the Scan/US directory and all of its subdirectories.
  78. 2. delete the file named SCANUS.INI located in your \WINDOWS directory.
